ART QUAKE

Hand painted designs make a comeback with artist Alyn Defay.

'I was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I moved to New York in 2010 and completed my last year of high school. I’ve been here ever since. I then attend the Borough of Manhattan Community College where I started getting intrigued by the world of fashion. In school, I was learning computer science but outside of school, I started working as a model and a retail associate at a clothing store simultaneously. While in school I then started a business of hand-painted hats with some local artists from Haiti which evolved into Artquake Studios.

My art is a representation of who I am, It’s a representation of my culture & my influences, it represents my point of view on subjects that matter to me and it’s also an homage to everyone that inspired me and paved the way for me to be in the position the I am today. I draw a lot from my childhood, growing up in Haiti. I also create art based on what I would like to see happen. I named my Brand Artquake because I survived a life-changing event in 2010 when an earthquake of 7.2 mags Tore down Port-au-Prince and its surroundings killing over 300,000 people.

I would describe my work as a combination of styles and looks in fashion that I love with hand-painted messages and designs. My work is also a beautiful way to showcase our individuality.'
