Photojournalism: Janwaar

Part of AMF’s Stories of Sport Series: Janwaar celebrates a lively group of kids whose lives transform when a skatepark is built in their small Indian village. Through skateboarding, raw talent, creativity, and childhood joy break down generations of caste and gender barriers.

I've been skateboarding since I was 13, and it's shaped my life and worldview. When I heard about this story of skateboarding changing lives and breaking barriers, I knew it was worth exploring through film.

Though I grew up in Salt Lake City in the 90s, skateboarding with friends felt similar to the kids of Janwaar. Skateboarding sparks passion, individuality, and creativity, becoming a vehicle for change. Making this film was a joyful experience, and I hope it inspires viewers to make an impact.
